residential activities training
GB trains all its leaders to be effective and equipped children and youth workers.
In May 2005, we launched our new Residential Activity Training Programme. It is designed to equip new leaders with the skills and knowledge that are necessary for them to fulfil their role in GB
As before, training in camping under canvas and indoor camping are required.
All modules will be needed for under Canvas Training, and this one module will be excluded for Indoor
Residential Training
Refresher training must be undertaken every 5 years.
How it works
Each unit is presented as a two page spread
The unit begins with ‘the objectives’ the key learning points that the unit is trying to put over
On the left are all the facts that the leader needs to know, expressed simply as bullet points and these act as an aide memoir for the trainer
On the right are four or five suggested activities which can be used
These provide a spring board for further discussion
At the end of each unit there is a section entitled Outcomes, with questions that the trainee should be able to answer
And finally there are a number of resource sheets included.
Residential Events
The Modules are
Purpose of Residential Activities
Planning a Residential Event – Venues, Transport and Programme
Communicating and Liasing with others

Financial Management
Risk Assessments

Training needs will differ, according to the type of residential event which trainees intend to run. Details of the maintenance and care of chemical toilets, for example, will be irrelevant to the officer who has no intention of camping on a site without plumbed-in facilities!
It is important, however, to provide as much experience and practical opportunity as possible for trainees to handle canvas in varying conditions.
They should also be able to consider realistically the challenges and demands of camping, so that they will be confident to make wise decisions in the event of the many circumstances, which can present themselves on a canvas camp.
The Residential Event Handbook, although dated, provides much detail, and the trainee (and trainer) will find it helpful to refer to this publication or to other books on the subject of canvas camping.
Training should include reference to the following areas, with as much opportunity for
Practical experience as possible:
Choice of site, whether public or private: soil, physical features, accessibility, sole or shared use, toilet and washing facilities provision for adverse weather conditions.
Choice of canvas: advantages and disadvantages of various types of tents, how to pitch and strike and the care and maintenance of canvas in all weather conditions (including marquees).
Other equipment required on canvas camp.
Site layout: order of pitching.
Camp gadgets as appropriate for different residential events.
Safety on a canvas camp: fire, trip hazards, security.
Various methods of cooking, including camp fire. Issues regarding preparation and storage of food on a canvas camp.
Provision and maintenance of adequate washing and toilet facilities and the appropriate disposal of various types of waste.
Striking camp: storage of equipment
A Section from Financial Management is included for you to take a look at. See below. Adult leaders wishing to become commissioned officers’ in GB undertake this programme and attend further relevant training at least once every 5 years.

We offer en suite dormitory accommodation, and are set in the peaceful countryside surrounded by farmland, just 2 miles from the sea. We also offer some amazing activities…
Activities
Our activities are all lead by fully qualified instructors who love their jobs, Pembrokeshire, and the outdoors. Safety, as well as fun is of paramount importance to us. We are licensed by the Adventure Activity Licensing Service (AALS, formerly known as AALA) Our activities include:
