Life with Jesus is a life with hope
Opening Activity – Pass the message
You will need: A coin and 1 small object such as a spoon, keys etc
Aim: To introduce the idea of passing on a message.
Divide the group into 2 teams. Sit the teams in two lines sitting back to back. At the end of the line place the small object so that the last member of each team can reach out and grab it. As the leader, stand at the opposite end of the line from the object and flip the coin. If the coin shows tails the teams do nothing. If the coin shows heads a message is sent down the team by each member squeezing the hand of the person next to them. When the message reaches the final team member they grab the object. A point is gained by the team with the object. If the person at the end grabs the object without a head flipped on the coin the team losses a point.

Opening Activity – The Simpsons Movie
You will need: A copy of The Simpsons Movie and something to play it on.
Play The Simpsons Movie from 3:57 (the front of the church) – 6:45 (in the car getting waffles) On a DVD this is the whole of Chapter 3.
Bible reading – Extreme Lengths
You will need: A Bible
Read Romans 5:1-11
Activity – Quick Quiz
You will need: A copy of Romans 5:1-11 from the New Century Version of the Bible
- How are we made right with God?
- What is our hope?
- What will this hope never do?
- When did Christ die for us?
- How does God show His great love for us?
- What have we been saved from?
- Who can we now be friends with?
- These are not directly in the text but encourage thinking about the text.
- What do we do that makes God angry?
- Who is God’s son?
- Why do you think God gave His son?
If you are doing this with a group you could either do this quiz in a pub quiz style or for a more active group you could create multiple choice questions (a-c) and designate different areas in the room to run to for the right answer.
Discussion – So what about now?
You will need: Nothing
The Simpsons Movie suggested that God spoke to people today but Jesus lived on the earth about 2000 years ago. How do you think the hope given through Jesus and talked about in Romans, effect life today?
Think About – A tenacious and constant hope
As people we naturally want to go against what God wants. This is what sin is and because of this we cannot have a close relationship with God. God loves us and really wants to be safe and happy. He knows that while we live with sin we are in danger of making ourselves and others sad and eventually dying and never being able to be close to God. By our own power we are not strong enough to fight the desire to sin so we are in a hopeless situation.
Therefore God sent Jesus and because of the fact that He never sinned, and He died and came back to life we now have an opportunity to be free from sin and the pain and suffering that comes with that. If we put our faith in the fact that Jesus is the son of God and that through Him dying and coming back to life He has the power to take away our sin we are free to have a relationship with God now while we are on Earth and forever in heaven. No longer are we fighting a hopeless battle against sin but Jesus has fought it for us so now we are full of hope.
Closing Prayer
Dear God
Thank you for your amazing love for us and patience with us. Sorry for the things we do that disappoint you and make you angry. Please help me understand more about the hope that is brought through Jesus’ death. Amen
