adult leader training

GB trains all its leaders to be effective and equipped children and youth workers.

Our adult leader training course was updated in July 2004.

All leaders are either CRB checked or police checked and supported by the church the company is linked to.

• The training is divided into modules each covering a different area of knowledge or skill
• Each module comprises a number of different units of training material.
• Leaders are required to complete specific units dependent upon the role they are going to undertake
• Training may be administered by the District Commissioner, or her designated deputy (e.g. Training Officer, Deputy Commissioner)
• Some modules / units are compulsory, others may be chosen according to the role which the leader will undertake (or the skill that they already have)
• Where prospective leaders have previous experience / training / professional qualification, then exemption may be granted.

AUXILIARY WORKERS

Those seeking to serve GB as Auxiliary workers need to:

• be aware of safe practice and their duty of care
• have a basic understanding of GB
• have basic skills that will enable them to serve practically
• understand the responsibilities of working as part of a team.

They will be required to undertake the following basic training:

Pastoral Care Module:
Child Protection unit
Relationships Module: 
Working with others unit
Brigade Knowledge Module
One unit of own choice
Practical Skills Module: 
One unit of own choice: 

LIEUTENANTS

Those wishing to take a commission in GB as a Lieutenant are required to undertake a more extensive training. They are appointed formally by the church and will be required to:

• Show an understanding of the responsibilities of Christian leadership
• Have an understanding of how children or young people develop
• Be aware of their pastoral responsibilities including those relating to child protection
• Develop practical skills relevant to their role

They will be required to undertake the following training:

Developing Christian Leadership Module all units
Helping young people develop faith all units
Understanding Children OR Understanding Young People all units
Developing relationships Module all units
Pastoral Care Module all units
Brigade Knowledge Module all units
Practical Skills Module   
Planning a programme unit
Leading Worship unit   
One unit of own choice

CAPTAINS

Those called to take on the role of company Captain, will become a team leader, having overall responsibility for the whole company. They will have additional practical responsibilities, even though some of these may be delegated. For their role they will need to:

• Understand the responsibilities of co-ordinating a team
• Be aware of the administrative structures which are needful for company work
• Understand something of the needs of both children and young people  

In addition to the training undertaken by the Lieutenants they will be required to complete the following training:

• Leadership Skills Module all units
• Understanding Children OR Understanding Young People
• Whichever module not previously done
